 A Journey with and iPhone

365 (A Photo a Day): A Journey with an iPhoneAtlanta Celebrates Photography

Taking a photo a day for 365 days is more than a challenge; it’s a journey. The pressure to produce amidst the ebb and flow of life can be difficult. But it causes you to remain alive and awake to your surroundings, ever anticipating that next shot wherever life takes you. To be creative in the normalcy of life can be awkward, but I found it refreshing to look for visual interest in every view. It caused me to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of each moment for how it visually expressed itself to me.

My vehicle on this voyage was my iPhone. After years of schlepping photo gear about, I embraced the iPhone as the only equipment used to take and edit my images. What I found was that this little piece of equipment not only exceeded my expectation but actually expanded my artistic range and visual expression.

Presented at this exhibit are some of my favorites from the 365 images. I think they capture visual interest, beauty, emotion or just make you stop and think. I hope that people leave living with eyes wide open and perhaps have a willingness to capture what they see.

Below are a sampling from the many images represented during the event. The collection features a broad range of subject matter and technique all photographed and edited using the iPhone.

Do you still believe that the camera makes the photographer? i.Phoneography believes in the creative power of the gaze, in a new way to describe contemporaneity. Organized by Arteaparte, iPhoneography is the first Italian contest of photographs taken and edited with an iPhone. This is a language for images that becomes an art laboratory, and that involves a growing number of iPhoneographers from all around the world.

Focused on the traces of reality, but with a dreamy and visionary look: the exhibition based on the contest’s top pictures will be opened on 9 October 2010, at the Sixth Edition of the Contemporary Art Day organized by the AMACI, notably the Association of the Italian Contemporary Art Museums. The first stage of the exhibition will be held at the FIAF Gallery Arteaparte.

Photographer's Choice 2010

Each year Atlanta Photography Group (APG) presents Choice, an exciting exhibition featuring over 30 APG members’ work. Each artist has chosen one of their most stunning and innovative images from this year to present in this show. I chose a image in 2010 that I am very pleased with the final outcome. Both my subject and my self-portrait are present in this image.

Bedazzled

Southeastern Flower Show 2010

The Cobb Galleria Center in Atlanta, Georgia
I have to tell on myself as I got a chuckle from this.  I had a friend who I met during a Photo Workshop in Taos, New Mexico.  She actually is instrumental in orchestrating and facilitating the photography end of the Southeastern Horticultural Society’s Flower Show.  She was the one who contacted the members of this Taos workshop and asked us to submit work to be considered.  So I submitted 4 shots.  Shortly there after I received four Emails each describing the pieces I submitted.  In this Email it appeared like this:

BedazzledDivision: Photography Division 2010
Class: P09 Flowers, Flowers, Flowers
Exhibit Title: Bedazzled
Exhibit Price: $225.00

Novice? An Exhibitor who has not previously won a Blue or Red ribbon (First or Second place) in any class of a Design Division at a major flower show. Applies to both Exhibitor and Co-Exhibitor. Group exhibits do not qualify for novice classification

Answer : NO

Created On: 12/7/2009
Well I thought the NO was the answer to my submission.  I then wrote Jennifer to ask what the group was looking for so that I could learn for future submissions.  I figured if I got turned down and I could at least ask what the focus was then I might be able to understand and adjust my submissions for future events. She very kindly wrote back and stated that the NO was the answer to the question above.  I then asked if I could claim not having enough coffee.  Guess you have to keep a smile about yourself when communicating via E-mail.  So many times the message might get jumbled in the ether.

Anyway the judges selected three of my pieces for display and will be judged by Swan Coach House Gallery curator Marianne Lambert and Larry Winslett Showcase School of Photography Instructor.

Thank you SFS, look forward to the show!

Evolution

Bowen Art Center
in Dawsonville Georgia
February 2nd- March 12th

“Evolution” is the title curator Jennifer Julian has chosen for the show which will be featuring 12 fine art photographers.  Evolution has two goals, one is to display the process and development of the artists represented and two to show that indeed photography is a fine art.  A listing with detailed information about each photograph will be available in hopes that you will ask questions and learn more about what makes photography an art.  John Enslow’s piece Waipu’ilani has been selected to represent this show.

This shot taken in Kaui, Hawaii was another “there at just the right moment.”  I was set up and taking images of a water fall in Kaui by Turtle Beach.  Then a group of guys came running down to the water and one jumped in.  He then proceeded to pose quite unaware of me.  I could not believe the shots he was giving me.  When he became aware of me I knew it was over.  These shots were about his enjoyment of the water and the moment and not about being aware of how he looked.

Waipu’ilani is a Hawaiian term that means heavenly blown waters, or waters from heaven.  This image for me symbolizes the radiance and beauty that emerges from the life that is lost beneath the waters from heaven.  That heaven directs the flow and the force and ours is just to submerge beneath the power.  From this surrender comes radiance and beauty.  When we fight and struggle we loose.

Squirrel’s Day Out

Squirrels Day Out Behind the WheelAfter visiting Taos, New Mexico I heard about the New Mexico Magazine’s 9th annual photo contest.  I submitted 6 shots and today I was made aware of being selected as a finalist for the shot “Squirrel’s Day Out.”  Truly this was one of the most amazing things I have seen in nature.  I spend some 25-30 minutes taking photo after photo while this wonderful squirrel posed for me.  I was shocked!  Starting on the back of the truck, the furry friend moved around stopping at every location to make sure I had the shot I wanted.  At least this is what it felt like.  Normally you have a moment to capture your shot of nature.  “Here now, gone in but a moment,” but this was not like that at all.  “Here now, and if you don’t like that angle how about this one,” was the order of this day.

The winners will be featured in the January 10th issue of the magazine,

I hope the shot gets the kudos that I have given it

Well my little friend did it.  I received notification that the “Squirrel’s Day Out” photo has won.  This photo was awarded an Honorable Mention and will be featured in the January edition of the New Mexico Magazine.  I am real excited about this as it was like the sealing of the envelope on a wonderful trip through Arizona and New Mexico.

Relics of North Georgia

I don’t normally focus on relics as a subject matter but for this show I began to scout out items and areas where these items may be found.  I actually located quite a few and gained a deeper appreciation for the North Georgia area and the landmarks of eras gone by.

I am so pleased to have been called to look and find some treasures that just happen to be relics, also I am grateful to the Bowen Center for selecting all three of my submitted works. Papa’s Home, Early Riser, Farm House Door

Night of Hope

An Evening Celebrating and Supporting ALS Research.

Brought to you by
The Muscular Dystrophy Association

Farm House Door, taken in Rutledge, Georgia, is to be placed up for auctioned at the upcoming 2009 “Night of Hope” Gala.  This is the fourth annual Night of Hope Gala, an evening celebrating and supporting ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease) and will take place October 2, 2009 at the Intercontinental Hotel Buckhead.

Since the first event in 2006, over $1.35 million has been raised to fund research for the treatments and cure of the debilitating disease. The black-tie event is expecting 600 people in attendance and is anticipated to raise more than $700,000. The funds are allocated for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s ALS Division, which leads the worldwide scientific search for treatments and a cure for ALS. This devastating neuromuscular disease affects more than 30,000 Americans. Currently, more than 200 Georgians are affected with ALS.

Petitions

The Moment

This photo moves my heart.  It was taken at the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem, Israel in 2007.  The hue of this image conveys to me the merging of this Jewish man and the wall where he lays his petitions.  A union are made with his pursuit and his God.

This piece was presented at KrydPetitions Jerusalem Israel Western Waller Gallery in Dahlonega, Georgia during their “Body and Soul” exhibit March 1st – April 18th 2009.  I thank Jeff for featuring it and for giving me the opportunity to present work in this show.

The Western Wall in the midst of the Old City in Jerusalem is the section of the Western supporting wall of the Temple Mount which has remained intact since the destruction of the Second Temple (70 C.E.).  It became the most sacred spot for the Jewish faith by virtue of its proximity to the Western Wall of the Holy of Holies (where God’s Divine Presence dwelt) in the Temple.  It became a center of mourning over the destruction of the Temple and Israel’s exile, on the one hand, and of religious – in 20th century also national – communion with the memory of Israel’s former glory and the hope for its restoration, on the other. Because of the former association, it became known in European languages as the “Wailing Wall”.    Wikipedia
